FISHING NEWS FOR SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY (BIG BEAR LAKE) by Big Bear Sporting Goods 9-29-2021 Well it's not looking like the trout bite is going to slow down anytime soon. Powerbaits and night crawlers hanging down in the 4 to 8 foot range are still bringing in lots of limits. Spoons and spinners are doing the trick as well. Even fly fishing with both wet and dry flies is producing. Trolling on leadcore at one to two colors or monofilament with small Rapalas, spoons, or night crawlers is another way to ensure success. The biggest change is that the bright moon phase has shifted to morning bite a little later into the day, so getting out at dawn is not necessary. The evening bite, from sunset into the night, is most definitely where most of the action has been seen. The bass bite continues to be a little spotty, but finesse fishing around the observatory and windy point is paying off for some anglers. Choose a floating worm in green pumpkin or purple (a bit of chartreuse is helpful as well), and put it on a drop shot or shakey head. If you want to cover water a little quicker try a weedless rigged swimbait, a lipless crank, or a spinnerbait. With summer in full swing there are plenty of night fishing opportunities for catfish, carp, and of course crawfish. BBSG staff members Bryce and Bob dropped a trap in a couple of nights ago and pulled out a basket full of these lobster-sized crawfish. FISHING REPORTS: AUGUST 30, 2021 The Lake has been very busy with vacationers & folks playing work hookie (everyday) and the fishing can be tough during the boat races. Although some early risers and owls are doing very well, the banker-hour fisherfolks are doing okay with the control depth fishing methods, but the summer slow down with our rainbows is here. Down riggers, dipsey divers and slip bobbin fishing style is in effect. A downrigger trolled night crawler behind some hardware or just bareback is a known commodity for this time of the year. A dipsy diver with a wonder bread color (or whatever color you like) needle fish were deadly a few weeks ago. Also, of course, the dough baiters on the slip float are doing well at the dam and nearby cool deep water. The appropriate depth is looking like between 10 and 20 feet, and it fluctuates a little each day. Do not count out the trusty Rapala trolled in the morning and afternoon when the dust settles. Outside papoose and boulder bay have produced well as of late. A few folk's mid-day in the middle of our independence celebration did very well on slip bobbers tied to the mooring balls in the west. These hot temps are like sleeping pills to our local trout, but just like us after a good nap they still gotta eat. The catfish have come alive, and the warm shallows are doing pretty good on nightcrawlers and cut material and the good old, almost free, Bar S hot dog. Have seen a few nice 3-lbers showing up with the occasional noodling mouth monster. Crappie have been slow to nonexistent. Bluegill are extinct or at least very well hidden. The bass bite was fantastic pre spawn and turned off for a bit and are now back in full chow mode. Texas rig around docks and rocks or the trusted wacky attack is producing well and is picking up. Soft crawdad baits are also great along with lizards and chatter baits. Weedless presentation is mandatory this time of year and so is going in the trenches. Top water is a blast and effective but is short lived after the sun pops out. A spook or plopper in Bass and Bluegill colors is working early and late very early and very late. MAY 20, 2021 Spring has sprung and the weather hasn't looked at the calendar yet so SHHH! Water is warming and the fish are getting very active. Not going to last, something will happen to Ms. Mother Nature to punish us before its all over. Slow trollers are doing very well in various places near shore where the water is warming using Rapalas, Needlefish, Nightcrawlers, Wedding RIngs, Castmasters, Roostertails, hot dogs, cheese and crackers… exactly!! Everything seems to work this time of year, so don't be afraid to switch it up. Some heavy weight cage fighters are showing up at the dock this spring from the squared circle. A lot of talk from the truck chasers asking about stocking, consider this bad boy stocked plum full and has been for many years. The entire Lake is mixed with water temperatures and dissolved oxygen so the fish have no huge preference except maybe looking to warm on the surface and shallows until you arrive of course. Drifters and shore folks are all finding moments of chaos with the typical offering of dough bait and mouse tails and the secret worm and a hook. Mid-Morning and mid-afternoon are on fire with a little slow relax time in between so don't doze off for too long. Just remember the definition of fishing is a jerk on one end waiting for a jerk on the other "make sure you pick you end". The Lake is full of fish and not people but that and the weather wont last for long. Spring bassin is showing signs of a good kick off to the season. Crankbaits and soft plastics never fail in the spring. I hear rumors of a new Lake record Smallmouth yet to be confirmed. No panfish showing their lips yet but the Crappie should be of pan size this year when they decide to show up. It is always short and sweet but always sweet. Catfish are snoozing along with the elusive Bluegill. News flash!!! The Carp Round Up is on for Fathers Day weekend. Come one come all to the G.O.A.T (just one mans opinion) carp fiesta. Cant forget the 50K tournament also in June 2021. The generous donation from my great supporters and friends Monique and Will from Visit Big Bear "will" make for a full weekend of spanking guaranteed! Fishing Report May 20, 2021 The world is a crazy place at the moment as will be this report, but who knows what tomorrow will bring. Fishing has been hit and miss and when it hits, it's a fire drill. Same magic tools are working except cheese and crackers haven't done so well but Rapalas and needle fish in bright colors have produced well. Nothing to do with a lack of fish, the fish graph looks like a dot to dot, your problem is connecting the dots. During windy days the drifters have found a decent zone between Papoose and Metcalf Bay with a good concentration of fish in front of boulder. Night crawlers and mouse tails are a good bet. Down riggers and lead core will become a "need" not a "want" as the sun pounds the surface. We are supposed to be seeing a cool down. However, this spring has been a scorcher compared to the average spring gradual warm up, with that the trout booked it west to avoid a jacuzzi bath. The wind has played a huge part in daily success, apparently the sun is exploding and causing abnormal weather patterns ( this is the only part I didn't make up). 2020 Archived Fishing Reports from Big Bear Lake - October 31, 2020 Now the trollers are needle fishing to the lake death with a few colors in the water and doing okay. Stocking is needed desperately and if you want something done right you know what they say. Otherwise we may never catch a fish again. The lake has been beat up with being the only game in town, everyone was spiking the ball on every inch of the shoreline and dang near moving in like a homeless camp. With that said the crappie bite has been good, it has been awhile since I have seen this many crappie showing their face. Mini jigs have been doing the trick near the docks and rocks. Our bass fishing has been great, at least for this lake it has been. Lots of 3 lb. smallies and a new lake record largemouth has been CPR'ed and still swimming for your entertainment. We are open with restrictions , visit our website for current updates and limitations. Don't make your plans until you understand our procedures. Water temperature at the surface is 41 degrees

Archived -- Fishing Report October 30, 2020. We called into Big Bear Sporting Goods today for a fish report of the lake. Here it is: Trolling is good pushing early morning up by the dam with a night crawler in 8-12 feet of water. Some fish are pushing a little deeper throughout the lake with some of the fish in 20-30 feet of water. Fishing from shore from the red house to the floating house using a night crawler is working good or try a Carolina rig with a 3-4 foot leader with powerbait. Bass fishing has picked up in shallow water, look for structure and small swim bait. Senko and imitation crawfish are working good. Recent big catches have been a 22 pound Blue Catfish and a 6 pound Rainbow. Last fish plant was about 3 weeks ago. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=803234770131642 < Previous Report 2021 -- The East Public Launch Ramp at Big Bear Lake opened starting APRIL 1st from 7:00am-5:00pm. for the most up-to-date information about use of Big Bear Lake. Fishing is beyond what we have seen in years . Fish stockings have been deep in Big Bear and full trucks are coming. FISHING REPORTS 2019 - for Golden Bear Cottages guests . October 26, 2019 -- I can see the evenings are cooling and the days shortening to drop these temps to real numbers and get these fish active again. BUT... There are still fish to find with the right technique and patience. Controlled depth fishing is the only answer and I'm seeing a bit of life in the early mornings and just at sunset so we have a window of biters. Algae is creeping but not blowing up yet, as soon as I see the water temps and DO dropping but the cooling off will save us just as it gets critical for these hold overs. I am feeling an itch and the only way I can scratch it is with more cow bell or a big fat stocking of scales and slime. Interesting to me how the methodical fisher bad asses have continually caught fish all summer and the towel tossers have not. Let this be a lesson to us-all patience pays off. If all else fails try a nice drift through a few areas with a light weight and a crawler or dough blob and see if the bell rings. I am feeling a good fall of bent rods is upon us and that itch will be scratched. Stand by its going to get weird thanks to my peeps at the Visitor's Bureau providing us the funds to make fun. Catfish are around and biting, use stink and stuff to find the noses of these kitties and of course they are late night partiers and love the lights out foraging. Haven't heard of a ton of Bass being caught but they are there on the little structure that we have and a slow bounce may be the ticket. On a good note, a truck load of bluegill are heading our way this week and those are only caught with the scientific method of hook-worm. It's very complicated but you can Google it. Crappies are cyclic and we are on the down and out rock bottom of the cycle but have no fear they will be back like we have seen them before. Nothing better than spending an evening by the dock watching panfish spanking a surface mini plug. One thing I know for sure is if you are having a bad day of fishing regardless of the success there is more to the story. We stocked some kitties this last fall and it seems it worked-they are showing up all over along with some very hefty bull heads at the scales. Cut mackerel and crawlers have been
It's very interesting after you drop 12,000 lbs. of rainbow trout into the lake that people start to catch Rainbow trout "weird". This weekend was a perfect example of just that. This is a hit as fishing folks from California and beyond came to try their luck on slaying the power ball fish. I hear that fishing was good and most caught some, and a few caught a lot, and scattered in were a few real monsters that hit the scales. The DFW has been showing us a touch of love and dropping a load of rainbows here and there which adds to filling up every nook and cranny with Pescado. The water is warming and the lake is beginning to stratify and be fickle which will help suppress the algae bloom that seems to be hampering our visibility among other things. Currently sinking Rapalas and leaded line used to sink a colorful needle fish are producing. Drifting dough bait is always a great go-to if nothing else seems to be enticing a bite. We are not far away from the magical suspended fish slip bobbing extravaganza AKA "controlled depth fishing" which happens every summer when the lake layers (stratifies). The lake is warming fast and this will change everything. Lakes are like snowflakes and this one is melting fast. Spring bass fishing has been phenomenal; we are seeing excellent size and numbers. Crank baits and plastics are smoking them; super-hot bait is the smoke colored gitzit tube bates. We are seeing a few catfish showing up along with a hand full of bullheads. Cut mackerel is also a go-to along with the magic of anything that smells like feet. The moment you all have been waiting for, the carp are up and everywhere. The spawn just keeps on going like an energizer bunny. Lots of folks are taking advantage of the early spawn and sharpening their skills for the greatest tournament on earth. The 14th annual Carp Round-up will be taking off without a hitch on the 17th and 18th of June. We are only taking the first 10,000 entrants so snooze you lose.
