FISHING REPORT APRIL 14, 2018 - for Golden Bear Cottages guests
The cry for the reel fishing report has been heard. The saying "no news is good news" doesn't
always hold true since there has been nothing good to report for months. It has been a rough start to our spring fishing, however we are seeing a bit of light at the end of the tunnel as for now.
It's very interesting after you drop 12k lbs. of rainbow trout into the lake that people start to catch Rainbow trout "weird". This weekend was a perfect example of just that. The 50K was a hit as folks from California and beyond came to try their luck on slaying the power ball fish. I hear that fishing was good and most caught some, and a few caught a lot, and scattered in were a few real monsters that hit the scales.
The DFW has been showing us a touch of love and dropping a load of rainbows here and there which adds to filling up every nook and cranny with Pescado.
The water is warming and the lake is beginning to stratify and be fickle which will help suppress the algae bloom that seems to be hampering our visibility among other things.
Currently sinking Rapalas and leaded line used to sink a colorful needle fish are producing.
Drifting dough bait is always a great go-to if nothing else seems to be enticing a bite. We are not far away from the magical suspended fish slip bobbing extravaganza AKA "controlled depth fishing" which happens every summer when the lake layers (stratifies). The lake is warming fast and this will change everything. Lakes are like snowflakes and this one is melting fast.
Spring bass fishing has been phenomenal; we are seeing excellent size and numbers.
Crank baits and plastics are smoking them; super-hot bait is the smoke colored gitzit tube bates.
We are seeing a few catfish showing up along with a hand full of bullheads. Cut mackerel is
also a go-to along with the magic of anything that smells like feet.
The moment you all have been waiting for, the carp are up and everywhere. The spawn just keeps on going like an energizer bunny. Lots of folks are taking advantage of the early spawn and sharpening their skills for the greatest tournament on earth. The 14th annual Carp Round-up will be taking off without a hitch on the 17th and 18th of June. We are only taking the first 10,000 entrants so snooze you lose. Raffle is out of control this year everyone wins. | | Lake surface temperature is now near 45 degrees and falling (soon to freeze) Autumn/Winter activities near ski resorts in cool Big Bear Kayak discount rental coupons available in the office. . 2017 Fishing reports for Big Bear Lake Big Bear Lake Fishing Report - July-August 2017 This may be the easiest report I have ever put together because the fishing is that good and it really doesn't matter what I say, YOU WILL CATCH FISH. Currently Rapala and Needlefish are working well on the troll. The folks using the drift method have been very successful as well. Dough bait from the shoreline is always a good go-to this time of the year. The Lake is packaged full of beautiful trout right now and we are seeing some of the best fishing in a decade. The water is mixed so there is no honey hole at the present time however the fish are moving to the west as the water warms. So get out and try your luck and catch something for the grill. Bass fishing is good along the structure; we have seen a lot of fish in the three pound range. The carp have not shown their face as of yet but we hope to see sprinklings of uglys soon as the granddaddy tournament of them all is rapidly approaching. Get your registration in soon as we have blown this baby up this year to be the best ever. FISHING TIP OF THE WEEK The water clarity is pretty good this time of year so use the lightest line you can, 4lb or less works for most applications. There's no finer time to be out on beautiful Big Bear Lake trolling for rainbow trout. The tree leaves are turning vibrant colors before our eyes daily now. The air is starting to chill with the scent of wood burning from chimney's and there's frost on the boat in the morning now! All these are indicators that the trout are about to adjust to the cooler water temperatures and the bite will be on most days to come before seasons end. This is truly prime time to be on the lake since all other recreation activities have subsided and fishing is the main attraction now with incredible conditions. The past couple weeks through a curve at us several times as we expected and we had to work a bit harder to locate and get the trouts attention. With the water temperatures adjusting and a huge plant for TroutfesT the fish were temperamental at times as they scatter all around the lake. The good news is the past six hours of fishing did bring a change for the better for those trolling. Last weekend was TroutfesT 2014 and Lucky Bear Fishing Friend John Rizya and his family had success trolling night crawlers on their down rigger and leaded line. The youngest of the Rizya Family, Deztany, won FIRST PLACE of the girls division. Deztany's grandpa, John did a excellent job putting the family on the fish and Deztany did a great job catching!! The past two weeks the majority of our fish have been caught along the south shore from Gilner Pt to Papoose Bay and in the middle of the lake many times. We did catch along the north shore from SS Relief to the West Ramp but many times we could find a good pattern and get into fish before venturing too far from Metcalf Bay and Boulder Bay. There were times we did get into double and triple hits which is always nice and brings memorable excitement to the trip! The down riggers were at 3-15 feet most times and leaded lines from 2-4 colors. Down riggers did well with custom made spinners tipped with crawlers and the hottest lures on leaded lines were Watermelon and Red Magic Needlefish, brown and gold colored/patterned Rapalas, Phoebes and Little Warriors in Green Gobie and Heavens Door both with copper backs. Flat lining a variety of Rapalas and Flicker Shads has brought a few of the larger fish ranging 2 1/2-3 pounds. Timing has been hard to call but fortunately three hour trips seem to always average from 5-15 fish and occasionally late mornings-mid day did have a little more action. Everyone is mentioning the ideal weather and beauty of the ever changing scenery and enjoying the photo opportunities. There is no better time to plan a getaway to Big Bear after summer has ended and before the winter rush- a special calm or LULL that most locals and visitors who know enjoy most!

September 31, 2015 By trish Beautiful conditions and nice Fall weather have many planning Big Bear fishing trips! Families, couples and groups of friends, colleagues and coworkers are still planning getaways while the gorgeous summer conditions continue and fishing is the highlight of the mountain stay! Trolling has been perfect this past week out on the lake. We covered the entire west end at times but from Metcalf Bay to the dam has continued to be the most productive area for us. From Boulder Bay to Papoose Bay has been particularly generous with action and on occasion the dam has been a sure place to get into frequent doubles. Again, it's been a week of multiple fish hitting at once and landed at the same time which is extra thrilling and makes for priceless memories. Down riggers have been running a variety of custom made spinners with blades from Alaska and assorted UV and Glow Beads we've collected from Utah to Michigan! Orange, Red with Crystal and custom painted blades with UV, Glitter and Glow finishes in reds, purples, greens and blues. Leaders from 3″-24″ trail the in line spinners with a night crawler and keeping em pinched off with less instead of MORE has been best to avoid short strikes. Leaded lines have been at 2-3 colors and hottest lures have been Green Gobie/Copper, Heavens Door/Copper and Wicked Witch/Silver Little Warriors, Watermelon and Red Magic Needlefish, Gold and Copper Thomas Bouyants. Slower speed has been best and turns have also contributed to some of the better strikes. Most of the 2+ lb rainbows were caught up at the shallower depths on the down riggers with night crawlers on spinners. Three hour trips have been great to allow for the LULL that can happen and for the hour that can be total glory! At times the lures are on fire then the spinners go wild so it's been great to have a combination of different rigs and depths running at once. This has been a awesome week for Lucky Bear with many returning customers who we enjoy taking to the rainbow trout each season and also a couple special new fishing friends we've made. Trolling for rainbow trout has been incredible this past week on Big Bear Lake with limits for almost all and several hard fighters up to three pounds. Summer vacation is over and the kids have gone back to school. This means the lake is now wide open for fishing as the temperatures drop and summertime activities dwindle down. What a fantastic week filled with lots of catching and releasing in beautiful conditions and mild weather. We have experienced some of the best fishing of the season in the past 30 days averaging 15-30 fish in three hours! It's hard to keep the fish off the lines lately and more are landed as we seemed to cease the short striking. Consistency in lures, locations, depths and trolling patterns or style of troll were all dialed in and became easy. We found the right combination that would work well at any time of day the past 30+ hours on the lake. Most rainbow trout were caught along the south shore from Metcalf Bay to the dam and we concentrated on the middle of the lake and over to the drop offs and several times had great action from Grays Landing to the SS Relief. Getting into a rhythm and repeating and coming into several fish at a time was simple and countless double and triple hits throughout the week. Many times two fish were put in the net at once. Night crawlers on various custom spinners in UV and Glow with different combinations of orange, red, crystal or chartreuse running at 2-6 feet and 10-15 feet on the down riggers were HOT all week. Leaded lines tinkered between 2-4 colors with Red Magic, Water Melon and Chicken Wing Needlefish or Green Gobie/Copper Little Warrior, Purple Hot Head and Brass Red Head Wee Dick Nites and various Rapalas in Greens, Gold or Firetiger. All times of day have been fine for fishing with only a couple moments during mid day that lull but with three hour trips it's been plenty of time to be productive. August 29, 2015 Lucky Bear Fishing Charters By trish Friends and families havin' fun with all the rainbow trout action trolling on beautiful Big Bear Lake! You cannot find a more comfortable time to troll for rainbow trout on Big Bear Lake. The temperatures are perfect the skies are blue and sometimes full of fluffy white clouds. We've been blessed with incredible sunrises and sunsets too! The consistency in fishing for us has been the territory and depths we are covering. Other than that it's hard to find the same lure or rig that stays ON at a particular time of day or for a long period of time. As soon as you want to say something is ON FIRE it will TURN OFF. The secret to us averaging 8-15 fish within three hours is to keep changing up our location, lures/rigs and speed. There have been times we are almost at a drift and other times we've been doing well by keeping the speed faster than normal. Using more rigs with rattle, thumps and sound and UV and GLOW is vital! Whether these lures are the ones hit or acting as attractors to bring the trout to the other lines we tend to keep a couple NOISY or BRIGHT lures/rigs running always. UV and GLOW and lures or rigs more common with Salmon, Walleye or Kokanee have been key all season and the past two seasons and they continue to catch the most fish. If the larger lure has too big of a hook we change it out or make a SHORT leader 3-14″ to trail a night crawler on. We trolled over 40 hours this past week and fished the entire west end of the lake. Most rainbow trout were caught from Metcalf Bay to the dam and many fish hit in the middle of the lake in the deeper water. The down riggers were at 3, 6, 12 and 15 feet and the leaded lines were running from 2 1/2 to 4 colors. Flexibility and willingness to change up lures and check night crawler rigs often as well as to keep moving to new locations are key now. Not near as many doubles and no triple hook ups this past week which was a bit different than earlier in the month. The past week clients did land over 1/2 dozen 2-3+ lb bows - all were exceptional hard fighters and beautiful fish. All the larger fish were caught on night crawlers trailing on custom made rigs of red or orange colors. The hottest lures of the week on the leaded lines were Watermelon and Pearl Bikini Needlefish, Wicked Witch and Green Gobie copper finish Little Warriors, Cat Dog and Purple Frog copper finish Scorpion Stingers and one particular PK Lure Prototype with a gold finish and orange dot pattern!!! Various sizes and types of Rapalas from HJ to ULM's- we had em all out this past week! Purples including Sunfires and Purpledescents and Greens like Perch, Bass or Muddler as well as Gold and Chrome finishes at 2-3 colors on the leaded lines and on the surface. Not one particular Rapala turned on it's been such a variety and fun to have a huge arsenal of sizes and types now. Best time of day could be ANY lately but three hour trips seem to be PERFECT for the trouts agenda as they do take their occasional breaks! August 11 Fishing Repost , 2015 By trish at Lucky Bear Fishing Charters Fine times catching rainbow trout on Big Bear Lake in the summertime! We're in the warmest days of summer and the trout are biting well. We trolled the entire west end of the lake for over 40 hours this past week. The best bite was from Trout Alley to the dam and many fish were caught out in the middle from Boulder Bay and over along the north shore from Grays Landing to the dam. We averaged 10-15 fish within three hours and many nice size hard fighters in the 1.75-2.25lb range. Down riggers were at 4-8 feet and 12-17 feet the entire week. Leaded lines at 3-4 colors. Flat lining flies at times and various Rapalas and Rebels were hitting- particularly chrome with orange or gold and orange along with a variety of deep green colors/patterns. Hottest lures were Little Warriors in Green Gobie/copper and Heavens Door/copper, various UV Needlefish, watermelon and pearl bikini Needlefish, PK Lures hot new lightweight prototype in gold with orange dots. Variety of dodgers, flashers and some made from walleye or salmon spoons trailing a night crawler on a 8″ leader. We change up our rigs and lures OFTEN and while doing so many fish are hitting. Try UV/GLOW finishes or rattling/vibrating lures and attractors. The past three seasons we have added a huge selection with a wide variety of styles and types of lures and goodies that are creating more site and sound and believe they are helping to produce more than scent does! We've been into doubles, triples and even two quads this past week. There is nothing funner or more exciting than multiple fish on at the same time and landing them all is extremely rewarding! Speed of the boat does matter at times when the fish take a break or seem to have lock jaw momentarily. We tend to do extreme slow or faster troll and make hard and quicker turns occasionally to get the lures to drop and attract the lazy or less active fish. Letting the leaded line out a color or two and bringing it back up is the captains favorite past time lately and it works most times. It's a fine time to be in Big Bear where the temperatures are 10-20 degrees cooler and the air is fresh and skies are blue. There is nothing like the feeling of fishing on Big Bear Lake at the peak of summer! Almost everyone on the boat mentions how great it feels, smells and looks in Big Bear during the summer. Trolling on such a beautiful lake gives us all time to recharge while relaxing and having many moments filled with smiles and laughter. One of the best things about rainbow trout fishing on Big Bear Lake in the summer is the challenge of locating the fish that are interested. This gives opportunity to cover lots of territory and view all the awesome areas of the lake. The fish get less interested or more lethargic when it heats up instead of wanting to attack the lures or bait like they do in the spring or fall. When you do find the ones that bite you must hope that they are aggressive enough to take the hook deep enough to make it to the boat. Slower reeling and waiting to wear the trout out is vital now. Forcing, horsing and pumping the fishing rod as well as fast reeling has not been the best techniques and results in many long line releases! The joy of rainbow trout fishing really does come not only from the ones that are caught but also from the ones that are lost. This is what makes fishing fun and a challenge and brings the ultimate appreciation of landing one- particularly a BIG ONE! Almost all of our fish this week that were landed fell off the hook and into the net or were barely hooked. Everyone this week did wonderful learning to be patient not only as we located the fish but also as they reeled them it. It brought a special note to the trips that does not always happen. Seemed to always come back to the dock with the boat all chatting about how darn exciting the trip went. The past week we fished 36 hours and the trout were caught all over the west end of the lake. No particular location was better than another and many fish were caught near drop offs and some out in the middle in the deeper water. The thrill of the week had to be all the double hook ups and many happened more than once during the trips! We may wait a good hour at times then run into multiple fish within thirty minutes. The lures of the week have been Watermelon, UV Red and Huckleberry Needlefish, brown trout Rapalas, green gobie Little Warrior with a copper back and night crawlers. Down riggers have been hit at shallow depths often from 3-7 feet and also 12-21 feet. Leaded lines were 3-4 colors most times. Flat lining various Rapalas was working well too but not one particular pattern/color stayed consistent. Holding steady with most three hour trips averaging 5-10 rainbow trout. There have been several double digit trips and also a few trips we could count on one hand!!! Many fish are getting on the lines and about three quarters of the fish were not landed this week. The water has reached summertime temperatures and the rainbow trout are on the move and can be a bit touchy or finicky as they hit the lures and night crawlers often but many times do not take them. It's been incredible weather and the skies, forest, sunrises and sunsets have been fantastic for making the fishing the most enjoyable. We have been blessed and grateful to take several Military and their families out on the lake to the rainbow trout. Fishing Report July 5, 2015 Big Bear Lake has an abundance of trout.
The secret is out and "YES" we have been dumping truckloads of trout in Big Bear Lake. Along with Fish and Wildlife's scheduled stockings, the Big Bear Lake Water District has purchased 4 additional loads to date. The trout fishing has been good to excellent depending on your skill level and time off work. Trollers with Rapalas and needle fish are cleaning up on fish up to 5lbs. Shore anglers are doing well with a slip sinker rig and dough baits. The lake is stratifying (layering) as we speak and a slip bobber rig is going to be the ticket very soon. The lake had a small algae bloom which impaired clarity a bit and as we layer we will see better clarity. Choose your colors according to the current conditions. Lights when it is light and darks when it is dark. Bass are flying off the nests and are going postal on your offerings. They are moving onto structure and finding the perfect ambush point to spank your bait. Crappie went nuts for the last couple weeks and are slowing a bit but still getting some great reports of nice sized slabs showing on meal worms and mini jigs. A lot of the rock piles are high and dry to edges and ledges are where to find them before they suspend for the summer. Bluegill are doing great for the last couple years and this year should be even better. A few nice fish showing on the old bobber and worm trick seems to fool them every time. Catfish are still a little quiet but with the water temps rising into the mid 60's they are gearing up to boil on your stink baits. Fishing Report June 18, 2015 By trish Big Bear Lake is warming up and the rainbow trout are playing hard to get! The past week has brought spectacular weather and great times for all out on the lake before the summer crowds arrive. The rainbow trout have been much harder to locate and a challenge to get them to the boat! We spent 27 hours this past week trolling all over the west end of the lake. Majority of our fish were caught along the south shore from Gilner Pt to Boulder Bay and along the north shore from the Dam to Grays Landing. No particular depths stay true from day to day or hour to hour! We caught all our fish from the surface to 24 feet. Night crawlers, various Rapalas, Little Warrior Heavens Door/Gold, Scorpian Stinger Purple Frog/Copper, Excel Gold Red Head Kokanee and Pink/Purple Tasmanian Devils were the hottest all week. Leaded lines were at 3-4 colors and down riggers at 3-4, 12-15 and 19-24 and adjusted constantly throughout the week. Rapalas hit on and off flat lining the surface. Many 2-3lb quality rainbow trout have been caught daily and each 3 hour trip is averaging 5-10 fish landed and lots of action with several fish getting off before being landed at the net! It's been a week full of pressure trying to get the fish ON the hook and to the boat. Patience, consistent reeling and respecting when the trout fights and letting them wear out has made the fishing extra fun and a great learning experience. We have tried many different rigs, lures, bait and leaders to figure out how to make each trip a success and getting outside the box and being flexible with location and realizing that timing is sometimes everything when fishing. Patience, determination and appreciation of all the little things going on while fishing has made the transition from spring into summer a time to remember. This is a perfect time to get up to Big Bear Lake where the skies are clear and blue, temperatures are mild and the scenery is incredible. Summer's coming and the rainbow trout are biting on Big Bear Lake! This past week brought QUALITY size rainbow trout and decent fishing any time of day for us. Late morning and mid day seemed to be the best times overall for conditions and number of fish caught. We trolled the south shore from Gilner Pt to Papoose Bay and most the rainbow trout were hitting from 3ft-15ft from Metcalf Bay to Boulder Bay. Night crawlers were the hottest ticket and at the top of the menu all week long. Detail in the rigging/leaders, quality bait and patience when reeling in all helped when trying to keep the fish on the hook! Varying speed and turns also kept us getting into doubles and triples most trips. Little Warrior spoons in Green and Gold Gobie with silver finish when bright out, Scorpian Stinger spoons in Cat Dog and Purple Frog with copper finish when darker out , Tasmanian Devils in Pink/Purple and Yellow/Orange all at 3 colors on the leaded lines. Olive Flies, PK Lures Prototype Flies and Rapalas in various patterns in shades of greens on the surface. Night Crawlers from 3ft-19ft on the down riggers. We trolled 21 hours this past week and averaged 7-18 fish on each three hour trip. The trout are fighting hard and many ranged 2-3lbs. On June 4th we took eight Boy Scouts out and they each landed 2 fish within 3 hours no problem following great instructions and working as a team during double hookups! Great Memorial Day on Big Bear Lake Fishing Report May 30, 2015It was a beautiful Memorial Day Weekend on Big Bear Lake. This is a favorite time of year when the trout keep us workin' to find the hungry ones and trolling allows us to cover lots of territory quickly. The trout are well fed from all the natural food supply and the 2lb+ size and beautiful pink meat is an indicator of time well spent in a quality lake. We did pick up some smaller stocked trout along the way this past week and almost all were released successfully. The good news is you can figure out and almost isolate where the nicer size hold overs are biting. The past week we would find the best trout in 38 feet deep in the lake.ALL fish were caught between 41-42 feet deep so we are aware they are moving rapidly and into the deeper water. When we fished east of Metcalf Bay/Windy Point we hit almost all smaller fish. This week our depths completely changed along with our bait and lures and we were able to locate a few reliable spots that would give within a three hour trip most times of day. The largest rainbow trout were caught on the surface, 6-12 feet on down riggers and 2 1/2 to 3 colors on the leaded lines with occasional other hits down at 25-28 feet on down riggers and as deep as 4 or 5 colors on the leaded line! So flexibility has been key to getting our numbers up from the start of the season. This week we averaged 6-10 trout in three hours and had a couple of 2 fish trips and spent 24 hours on the lake. Best spot for us was along Trout Alley and out across to Gray's Landing and back to Windy Point. We stayed in 41-42 deep water as much as possible until hitting shallower areas of the lake. Some fish were caught to the East too. Hottest lures were Little Warriors Barney/Silver or Gold, Heavens Door/Silver, Hot Banana Glow, various Brown Trout Rapalas, Purple Hot Head Wee Dick Nite, Sarge's Ballistic Bait Co. Ballistic Baby inline spinner, Dark Purple Frog Scorpian Stinger and UV Hum Dingers in silver and pink. Night crawlers were working well from surface to 12 feet at times. Many others too hit and the notable colors were once again BRIGHT PINK or DARK PURPLE and PERCH and GOBIE. What might have been working for us in the past is not working this season yet so be flexible and change up every 15 minutes or so and you will catch. Winds have been a challenge at times but fishing is doable and otherwise the conditions and weather are PERFECT now. Fishing Report May 22, 2015
We managed to find most fish in the rougher conditions up near the surface or down deeper. The past week we spent 15 hours on the lake and all our rainbow trout were caught trolling from Metcalf Bay to Papoose Bay and between Gilner Pt and Windy Pt. Flies and Rapalas on the surface particularly when the slight wind and ripple picks up across the lake. Down riggers were hitting at 4- 6, 19, 21 and 23 feet and leaded lines were at 3-4 colors. The hottest lures were CD-3 and CD-5 Rapalas in various patterns, Little Warriors in Green and Gold Gobie with silver or gold backs, various PK Lures Flies prototypes and a variety of flashers/dodgers with night crawlers. Not enough consistency with many lure patterns so not worth mentioning specific colors/patterns. Worth noting that many lures/flashers/dodgers we used were in green and purple shades and silver/copper/gold finishes all hit. What's important is to continuously switch up as the conditions and sun/clouds changes brightness throughout the day. Varying leaders, speed and turns will help put the fish on the lines when the trout won't bite! Don't always follow the norm when the fish are not biting. Some very bright lures hit while darker out and gobie, perch, baby bass patterns were workin well at moments and could rarely get the brown, rainbow trout or firetiger to hit. We averaged 12 fish in three hours and ran about 30 different lures/rigs on 5-6 lines per trip. The bite has been hard to call with time of day and extreme differences with the winds. We had a 4 fish 3 hour trip on this past Thursday and Linda Ankrom from San Diego landed a beautiful 4.32lb lunker on this lower count trip. Then we had a 22 fish 4 hour trip on Saturday during the May Trout Classic. Both of these trips mentioned were late morning-mid day, similar wind conditions and we covered same locations and used similar variety of lures and night crawlers. The moon has been BRIGHT and winds not always favorable but we are catching by switching up often and sticking in the areas where we initially get more than one hit because beggars can't be choosers when you're dealing with GUSTS or LACK of wind. Plan to spend a little extra time if possible and you can never have enough in your fishing pantry or arsenal to catch the rainbow trout. We ran about 70 lures/rigs, two different size crawlers and three different scents during the past four trips. Fishing Report -- May 17, 2015
This weekend is the 32nd annual Jim Hall May Trout Classic. Large stocks of trout have been going in the lake every week for the last month with fish up to 8lbs. The boaters are fishing North Shore from the buoy line up to the North Shore landing in 8-15 feet of water. Needle fish in brass or pearl essence have been working great as well as night crawlers. Shore fisherman are fish by the Dam in 20-22 feet of water and casting 60 feet from shore with 3 foot leaders and a variety of powerbaits. Small mouth have picked up around China Island on a variety of plastics. Crappie and Bluegill are slow still but fish the dogs with earth colored jigs and you will find a few. Catfish has picked up with most catches being Bullheads and Channel Cats but there are a few Blues being caught as well. Mackerel and Catfish Stinkbait seem to be the best baits. Water Temperatures are between 54degrees.
Fishing Report -- May 10, 2015 Trout fishing has been excellent on holdover rainbows and DFW trout were planted each of the past two weeks and more fish are slated for next week. The trout spread over much of the lake. For shore anglers the north shoreline has been the best bet with small lures and floating baits both good bets. The trollers are working the Trout Triangle in the east end of the lake, through the middle of the lake, and at the dam with Needlefish and Thomas Bouyants. Limits are common with a lot of the holdover rainbows hitting the two-pound mark or more. Largemouth bass are very active, holding off points in 12 to 20 feet of water. Best baits are drop-shotted Robo Worms and skirted crayfish jigs. The bass are also showing along docks all over the lake. Smallmouth bass have moved on and off beds due to chilly weather, but are now setting up in the back of bays for spawning. Crappie and bluegill remain sluggish, but should come on strong as the weather continues to improve. Big Bear Lake Fishing Report (BBMWD) May 3, 2015:
Trout success is screaming and it is as good as it gets. We have seen limits as the norm and there isn't anything that doesn't work right now (except sleeping on the couch has had limited success). The District has made a couple trout plants to the Lake, hoping to see the DFW (Dept. of Fish and Wildlife) truck arrive and fill this baby to the brim with rainbows. The carry over fish from the winter are still showing up and the planters are filling the balance of the creel. Baiters from the shore are doing well on dough baits with 2 to 3 foot leaders on a slip sinker rig and the people on the move trolling have spanked them with Rapalas of all shapes and sizes the brook trout color seems to work best for me this time of year. Of course the lead core boys chatter is two to three colors and the needle fish combo is hard to beat. One thing for sure is water clarity is off the hook and light line is the ticket to fool the smart ones. Stay away from using rope or large cable because it DOESN'T WORK!!! Use as light of line as you can this water clarity is very good and these rainbow trout can be very line shy.
Bassers are finding fish on deep structure and doing well I might add. Lots of 3lb fish are showing up. Try bouncing a jig or two through the structure and wake these fish up. This season is going to be epic for small mouth and large mouth. We just broke a large mouth Lake record and I know the smallie record will be shattered this year as well.
No bluegill reports or crappie, but I can see them getting ready to have the annual crappie spring extravaganza. These crappie have grown quite a bit in a year and this should be a good year for some nice pan ready slabs.
No catfish reports to speak of but I have seen some carp floating on the warm sunny days. Carp Roundup this year is June 21st-22nd; come one, come all!
Fishing Report April 19, 2015
Trout fishing is off the hook right now. Cold temps combined with high oxygen levels has the Trout moving all over the lake. Shore anglers are catching them on the West end of the lake down by the Dam, Windy Point, Juniper Point and the East launch ramp. Fishing early morning or evening hours is the best time for catching them. Powerbait and Nightcrawlers on a 3 foot leader off the bottom is working good. The colors are salmon egg peach and garlic yellow. Inflated night crawlers keep them from sitting off the bottom. Bass are hunkering down still but structure is producing some Smallmouth Bass. Catfish is slow but Bullheads continue to bite on NIghtcrawlers and Mackerel. Trolling is working well by the Solar Observatory and up the centerline of the lake.
Fishing Report from the BBLMD on April 1, 2015The Spring trout season is HERE and it is time for the spring trout boil to begin. The fish are stacking on the tributaries in hopes that the streams will flow and the snow melt will provide a wall of water to make their way upstream and find a new girlfriend. However the little bit of precipitation we received was mostly rain and the snowpack is currently non-existent. There is still some time to bring the Lake up to a reasonable level and add to the one foot lake level rise we just received with the last rain storm.Now to the fun stuff… the fish are biting and they are big, I mean real big, as in 3lb stuff that are very common on stringers all over. I have seen the fly fishing gang doing very well on the pre-spawn fish and also floating bait with light, cold water colors and crawlers are putting fish in the bank. Juniper is always a producer when the water is warming and Stanfield works also. The Windy Point area has been pretty steady and will certainly have picked up big time from there to the Dam as the water warms. Folks are filling their stringers up; all along the shoreline from the old Gray's landing to the dam with big bad twelve sandwich eating monsters. This is as good as it gets!!!! My friends can even catch fish when it is like this. The East ramp is opening up on April 1st and with this report the world may show up, so come early and just an FYI the ramp will be closed on April 4th for a bike pre-qualification run. Big Bear Marina will offer free launching that day to cover any die hard fisherman.To let you in on a little secret; we have found a source to augment our trout stocking and I may be making this happen very soon. I would tell you when but I would have to … you know the rest.OK, we just dropped 3,500lbs of line rippers ready for the frying pan but you have to catch them first so loosen your drag because they will be taking some line.Remember fishing in the tributaries is prohibited when the streams are flowing in the spring and game warden Rick has already said he is on the prowl for violators. Big Bear Warm water fish are still in hibernation except a tickle of pre-spawn bass activity.

Although the past week brought cooler weather and tougher fishing conditions it was well worth the effort to bundle up and venture out on the hunt for the hungry, aggressive ones. There's nothing like trolling around gorgeous Big Bear Lake in the fall. While fishing for rainbow trout you will enjoy the incredible color changes in foliage around the shore, bright blue skies and crisp air with the hint of wood burning in the cabin stoves around the lake. Every trip has been blessed with eagle sightings lately. Just spend a few hours along the shore or on a boat fishing Big Bear Lake this time of year and you should be hooked for life! Several very nice size hard fighters right under 3lbs were landed in past days and all the trout that hit were feisty. It was slim pickin' as far as locations where we could find the most aggressive and active fish. The trout are all over the lake now, adjusting to the dramatic change in temps. They are well fed and still a bit touchy and acting finicky at times. Dozens of night crawlers were snatched right off the hooks and many hits on lures running on the leaded lines. We covered lots of territory some trips but always found ourselves back at the same HOT spots. Metcalf Bay (near Golden Bear Cottages), Windy Point and Gilner Point is where the majority of the trout were caught. We averaged 12 fish in three hours. Hottest lures have been UV red and Watermelon Needlefish, Green Gobie in copper or silver and Heavens Door copper Little Warriors, various smaller Rapalas on the surface, PK Lures Flutter Fish and flies, flo pink Macks Wedding Rings re-rigged with glow beads and tipped with a night crawler and various dodgers/flashers with night crawlers on 8-14″ leaders. Leaded lines hit most at 4 colors and down riggers at 3, 12 and 22 feet. Vary speed and turn to get the fish aggressive and on the hook. Patience and letting the fish fight is key to catching and never assume that the fish is small or not on the line. The three biggest fish of the week hit delicately, fought hard and then played possum at times! Be aware and check lures for weed often and crawlers must be watched closely for strikes. Some trips we got into great consistency and others each fish came in on a different lure or rig. So variety, determination, flexibility with locations has been vital to making the day go easy. Never feel your failing and always keep trying and stay creative and positive - you will catch your limit! Make sure to have fresh line, sharp hooks a good net and great selection of bait and lures there is a great chance of landing a lunker now. Most important- prepare and dress warm and always think safety FIRST. Also, plenty of snacks and drinks/water always make fishing extra enjoyable this time of year. October 4, 2014 -- Fishing updateFall has arrived and the change in temperature gets the rainbow trout spunky, on the move and has us on our toes a bit more. Flexibility, determination and willingness to try new things and get outside the box is what keeps us catching satisfactory numbers. Six to 15 trout within 3 hours was our average the past week and there was a tough 3 fish trip when the trout were striking short and not hooked deep at all. Trout are delicate and if not hooked well patience and finesse becomes more critical. More territory than usual has been covered and when coming into an area that gave two or more hits the best strategy has been to focus and concentrate on these small spots and not be so choosy! If the trout are being particular it’s best to respect that or you will spend more time fishing not catching. Most our fish came from the same three areas of the lake the past two weeks but not the same spots or depths. Along the south shore from Gilner Point to Papoose Bay is where majority of the trout were caught in the morning through mid day. Then early afternoon to dusk we spent most time along the north shore from SS Relief to Grays Landing and to the dam. Covering all depths from shore to the middle of the lake is also key now. Several nice hold overs at 2+lbs were caught very close to shore down at about 15 feet and others were caught out in the middle of the lake down at 20-25 feet. The trout are enjoying the change in temperatures and moving around rapidly and are feisty and hard fighting. Checking drags and lines frequently is important too. We have our drags set to run and checking lures for weed and flashers/dodgers with crawlers about every 10-15 minutes. Many crawlers will get hit and it is worth feeding about three trout to land one. Using scent and glow beads has helped get more trout on the hook for sure. Being active and aware will keep you warm and presentation perfect. When you get a bite/hit be patient and let the trout fight and wear out while keeping lines tight and you will get more fish to the net. Forcing or slack in the line is the little window a trout will take to escape! The hottest lures are UV red and watermelon needlefish, Heavens Door/copper, Green Gobie/silver, Gold Gobie/copper and gold Little Warriors, little copper Phoebe, chartreuse Macks wedding rings, various salmon spoons made into flashers many with metallic purple and silver, watermelon, fire tiger dodgers with a night crawler on a 10-12″ leader. The shorter the leader â€" the more action so try various leader lengths. In spring we had a 3 foot leader and during summer we ran 8-14 inch leaders. Down riggers were from 4 to 20 feet and most fish hit at 4 and 14 feet. Leaded lines from 2 1/2-4 1/2 colors most hitting around 4 colors. Very little surface action but a few nicer size fish caught flat lining and at 4ft on Macks wedding rings (re-rigged with glow beads!). Confidence, persistence and creativity are great qualities to possess while fishing for rainbow trout on Big Bear Lake! Being prepared with good gear, tackle and proper clothing and most important think safety to ensure a fun and successful time as the temperatures have dropped. Warm feet, hands, neck and head really help to keep you focusing on the fishing and good times. It’s been extremely dry so don’t forget to drink water and protect your skin from the elements. Archived Fish Reports: Lucky Bear Fishing Charters Fish Report 9/19/14 The weather is starting to change and fall is in the air. We averaged 10 rainbow trout in a three hour trip and there were a couple six and eight fish trips and as many as 18 fish in a trip so timing has mattered. All times of day have been fine to troll for rainbow trout but no time has been consistently the best. We have stayed west of Gilner and Windy Points and most trout were caught in front of Boulder Bay and Papoose Bay and up to the dam and along the north shore to Grays Landing. The fish were all over the lake and many different depths so we covered lots of territory each trip. Down riggers were from 2 to 20 feet, leaded lines 2 1/2 to 4 colors and the surface was hitting on occasion as well. The hottest lures were UV red, UV pink and watermelon needlefish, brown trout Rapalas, Heavens Door and Gold Gobie Little Warriors, PK Lures prototype flies and Flutter Fish and night crawlers. The trees are starting to change colors and jackets are now required many times! It's been absolutely spectacular out and around the lake and sometimes we were the only boat on the lake. Trolling for rainbow trout has been phenomenal for us the entire summer. We figured out the perfect blend between down riggers, leaded lines and surface. Labor Day weekend was spectacular and the majority of our trout were caught in the a.m. and mid day along the south shore from Metcalf Bay to the dam and then in the late afternoons to dusk we stayed along the north shore from the west ramp to the dam. Hot spots were Trout Alley and from Grays Landing to the dam. Hottest lures have been UV Red and Watermelon Needlefish, brown trout and various other smaller sized Rapalas, Heavens Door Little Warrior, PK Lures prototype flutter fish and flies and night crawlers. The down riggers were at 3 and 14 feet and leaded lines at 3 to 4 colors. When boat activity subsided and we could put lures on the surface several different Rapalas and Flicker Shads turned on. There were a couple 40+ and many 15-20 fish trips in the past week. Anytime of day has been fine to troll with exception of a few trips we had to work our times out with the lightning and rain. Archived: Lucky Bear Fishing Report 6/24/14 Finally finding consistency, 8-15 rainbow trout being caught within three hours on most trips now. Some smaller fish are being released daily. Quite a variety of sizes of trout being landed and many hard fighters at 1 1/2-2 1/2 lbs. There are still some lulls at times and mornings have remained slowest. Late morning all the way to dusk has been great times to be out not only for catching but for the spectacular weather as well. We covered much territory and spent 27 hours this past week trolling mostly on the east end from Observatory/Lagunita Lodge and back to Metcalf Bay. The nicest size fish were caught right outside Metcalf Bay, at Gilner Point and in front of Lagunita Lodge. Hottest lures have been pinks and fire tiger colored/patterened and silver and copper finishes. Salmon spoons made into flashers in a variety of purples and pinks all silver finishes with a crawler about 8-10" have been on fire. Little Warriors Heavens Door/Copper and a PK Flutter Fish pink/purple proto type will not stop giving. Orange and Gold colored Rapalas hit on the surface but no consistency in patterns. Salmon spoon flashers with crawlers are running on the down riggers at 3-8 feet or the surface. Lures were hitting from 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 colors on the leaded lines. Seeing more people netting now while drifting power bait and night crawlers throughout the lake from east to the dam. It was a slow start to the season and pretty tough spring for trout fishing on Big Bear Lake. The past couple weeks we have seen dramatic improvement and even with some gusty winds and a super moon these past days we still have kept some consistency. Many more fish hitting the lines and being caught now that summer has arrived and there is no finer time to be out on the lake trolling for rainbow trout. May 29, 2013 Archived Fishing ReportHere's the latest Lucky Bear Fishing Report: 5/29/14 It was a beautiful Memorial Day Weekend on Big Bear Lake. This is a favorite time of year when the trout keep us workin' to find the hungry ones and trolling allows us to cover lots of territory quickly. The trout are well fed from all the natural food supply and the 2lb+ size and beautiful pink meat is an indicator of time well spent in a quality lake. We did pick up some smaller stocked trout along the way this past week and almost all were released successfully. The good news is you can figure out and almost isolate where the nicer size hold overs are biting. The past week we would find the best trout in 38 feet deep in the lake. Now we are moving toward the center and almost ALL fish were caught between 41-42 feet deep so we are aware they are moving rapidly and into the deeper water. When we fished east of Metcalf Bay/Windy Point we hit almost all smaller fish. This week our depths completely changed along with our bait and lures and we were able to locate a few reliable spots that would give within a three hour trip most times of day. The largest rainbow trout were caught on the surface, 6-12 feet on down riggers and 2 1/2 to 3 colors on the leaded lines with occasional other hits down at 25-28 feet on down riggers and as deep as 4 or 5 colors on the leaded line! So flexibility has been key to getting our numbers up from the start of the season. This week we averaged 6-10 trout in three hours and had a couple of 2 fish trips and spent 24 hours on the lake. Best spot for us was along Trout Alley and out across to Gray's Landing and back to Windy Point. We stayed in 41-42 deep water as much as possible until hitting shallower areas of the lake. Some fish were caught to the East too. Hottest lures were Little Warriors Barney/Silver or Gold, Heavens Door/Silver, Hot Banana Glow, various Brown Trout Rapalas, Purple Hot Head Wee Dick Nite, Sarge's Ballistic Bait Co. Ballistic Baby inline spinner, Dark Purple Frog Scorpian Stinger and UV Hum Dingers in silver and pink. Night crawlers were working well from surface to 12 feet at times. Many others too hit and the notable colors were once again BRIGHT PINK or DARK PURPLE and PERCH and GOBIE. What might have been working for us in the past is not working this season yet so be flexible and change up every 15 minutes or so and you will catch. Winds have been a challenge at times but fishing is doable and otherwise the conditions and weather are PERFECT now. Big Bear Marina and Pleasure Point Marina is opening its boat rental and launch ramp Friday this week and the public ramps operated by BBMWD will open on Monday. The trout bite has been good in all the bays where there is water flow coming into the lake. The best bite has been near the shorelines in less than six feet of water on Power Bait fishing on eight to 18-inch leaders on four-pound test line. The water temperature is still a cool 39 degrees, but there have been a lot of one to two pound rainbows caught the past week. Bass are tough, but many fish have been moving shallow into warmer water and a few small mouth and large mouth have been caught on plastics. Other species very slow. Big Bear Lake is a"NEW LAKE". Trout fishing is good in the summer and fall months when it was usually slow, and slower during the spring when it is usually good. Large and small mouth bass, crappie and catfish have reestablished themselves after years of decline. What created the"NEW LAKE"? The Big Bear Municipal Water District is in the middle of a five year plan to eradicate prolific undesirable aquatic vegetation and allow the desirable plants to grow.
