From its site on Big Bear Lake's north shore, the 5,700-square-foot center offers a variety of exciting, entertaining and educational programs to be discovered. The center, co-managed by the nonprofit San Bernardino National Forest Association and the U.S. Forest Service, offers visitors the opportunity to get up close and personal with nature. Discovery Center programs include free naturalist-led weekend nature walks, interpretive programs, stargazing parties, canoe and kayaking tours, family campfire programs and hiking along the Pacific Crest Trail. There are also hands-on experiences panning for gold, building a birdfeeder, map and compass skills, and high-flying rockets. The 2012 Music in the Mountains summer concert series at the Discovery Center's amphitheater offers concerts under the stars. A concert is set for 6:30 Saturday, featuring The Long Run, Experience the Eagles; with special guest Fortunate Son, Tribute to John Fogerty & Creedence Clearwater Revival.
