productive ways to catch bass. With its thin, oversized paddle tail and built-in hook slot, Speed Shad swimbait is both highly effective and incredibly versatile. ![]() SEPTEMBER 23, 2021 - Fishing photos It is hard to miss this season here at the 25 degree cooler than you. Fishing is beyond what we have seen in years mainly because our friends at the Visitor's Bureau have given me their check book. Fish stockings have been deep in the wallet and full trucks are coming. ![]() Big Bear Lake is a great value. Big Bear Lake currently has 88% of its water capacity, that's almost 90% percent of the Lake's total surface area is available for recreation. ![]() Big Bear Lake EventsJune 12 & 13, 2021 - Fishin' for 50kJune 19 & 20, 2021 - Carp Round-Up July 3, 2021 - FREE Fishing Day July 4, 2021 - Rotary Fireworks Show August 19, 20 & 21, 2021 - Antique and Wooden Boat Show September 4, 2021 - FREE Fishing Day October 2 & 3, 2021 - Troutfest Summer Fishing - 2021 Fishing Reports AUGUST 30, 2021 The Lake has been very busy with vacationers & folks playing work hookie (everyday) and the fishing can be tough during the boat races. Although some early risers and owls are doing very well, the banker-hour fisherfolks are doing okay with the control depth fishing methods, but the summer slow down with our rainbows is here. Down riggers, dipsey divers and slip bobbin fishing style is in effect. A downrigger trolled night crawler behind some hardware or just bareback is a known commodity for this time of the year. A dipsy diver with a wonder bread color (or whatever color you like) needle fish were deadly a few weeks ago. Also, of course, the dough baiters on the slip float are doing well at the dam and nearby cool deep water. The appropriate depth is looking like between 10 and 20 feet, and it fluctuates a little each day. Do not count out the trusty Rapala trolled in the morning and afternoon when the dust settles. Outside papoose and boulder bay have produced well as of late. A few folk's mid-day in the middle of our independence celebration did very well on slip bobbers tied to the mooring balls in the west. These hot temps are like sleeping pills to our local trout, but just like us after a good nap they still gotta eat. The catfish have come alive, and the warm shallows are doing pretty good on nightcrawlers and cut material and the good old, almost free, Bar S hot dog. Have seen a few nice 3-lbers showing up with the occasional noodling mouth monster. Crappie have been slow to nonexistent. Bluegill are extinct or at least very well hidden. The bass bite was fantastic pre spawn and turned off for a bit and are now back in full chow mode. Texas rig around docks and rocks or the trusted wacky attack is producing well and is picking up. Soft crawdad baits are also great along with lizards and chatter baits. Weedless presentation is mandatory this time of year and so is going in the trenches. Top water is a blast and effective but is short lived after the sun pops out. A spook or plopper in Bass and Bluegill colors is working early and late very early and very late. JUNE 12, 2021 Bank fisherfolks have done fairly well with assorted power baits and blown up baby snakes. The quality of the trout has been excellent, with my partner big D loosing a 10 plus at the boat due to a net loading planning error, it happens. That toad is still hungry and swimming along with others in the same heavy weight class. Bassin has been decent after a fantastic spring with plastics and crank baits don't be afraid to get whacky with you presentation. Crayfish colors and imitators are doing well and crank baits in bluegill patterns are effective. Crappie? Couldn't find them anywhere but I know they are hiding somewhere. Bluegill are still tough to find unless you're a bass. Catfish should start waking up as the water nears 65 degrees and the bears should come out of the cave to feed. A few decent carp shooting days have occurred with some fish showing up at the office to experience the Carp-O-Matic for disposal. We called into Big Bear Sporting Goods today for a fish report of the lake. Here it is: Trolling is good pushing early morning up by the dam with a night crawler in 8-12 feet of water. Some fish are pushing a little deeper throughout the lake with some of the fish in 20-30 feet of water. Fishing from shore from the red house to the floating house using a night crawler is working good or try a Carolina rig with a 3-4 foot leader with powerbait. Bass fishing has picked up in shallow water, look for structure and small swim bait. Senko and imitation crawfish are working good. Recent big catches have been a 22 pound Blue Catfish and a 6 pound Rainbow. Last fish plant was about 3 weeks ago. ![]() 2021 Boat permit fees have been reduced by $10 for vessels registered in California. ![]() ![]() You will see the evenings cooling and the days shortening to drop these temps to real numbers and get these fish active again. There are still fish to find in the Fall with the right technique and patience. Controlled depth fishing is the only answer and I'm seeing a bit of life in the early mornings and just at sunset so we have a window of biters. The water temps and DO drop and the cooling off will save us just as it gets critical for these hold overs. If you are feeling an itch and the only way I can scratch it is with more cow bell or a big fat stocking of scales and slime. Interesting to me how the methodical fisher bad asses continually caught fish all summer and the towel tossers will not. Let this be a lesson to us-all patience pays off. If all else fails try a nice drift through a few areas with a light weight and a crawler or dough blob and see if the bell rings. I am feeling a good fall of bent rods is upon us and that itch will be scratched. Stand by its going to get weird thanks to my peeps at the Visitor's Bureau providing us the funds to make fun. Catfish will be around and biting, use stink and stuff to find the noses of these kitties and of course they are late night partiers and love the lights out foraging. ![]() Late summer trout will still be caught but they are there on the little structure that we have and a slow bounce may be the ticket. In August, a truck load of bluegill and trout will be heading our way and those are only caught with the scientific method of hook-worm. It's very complicated but you can Google it. Crappies are cyclic and we are on the down and out rock bottom of the cycle but have no fear they will be back like we have seen them before. Nothing better than spending an evening by the dock watching panfish spanking a surface mini plug. One thing I know for sure is if you are having a bad day of fishing regardless of the success there is more to the story. SPRING/SUMMER/AUTUMN 2021 The marinas in Big Bear are open with boat rentals, or bring your own boat and launch it at the west boat launch ramp. Of course, shore fishing is a great option too. If you're looking for a quick getaway here are some insider tips...

Bouncing jigs near structure and morning and late evening top water has been productive. Someone spread the rumor that we didn't have small mouth bass in Big Bear Lake. Well they are wrong as a football glove but no need to spread the truth - - that just leaves more for us! We stocked some kitties this last fall and it seems it worked-they are showing up all over along with some very hefty bull heads at the scales. Cut mackerel and crawlers have been doing the trick and as the water warms, it can only get better. Lake is high and the fish catching is high too. FISHING TIP OF THE MONTH
P.S., Catfish are waking up and bass are hungry ![]() ___________________________ Fishing Futures Report for 2021 Did you hear it? The sound of over one million rainbow trout being planted into Big Bear Lake. You heard me right. ONE MILLION. The blue light was flashing and the District purchased some beauties to over-flow our Lake for this season and seasons to come. The Big Bear Lake management is keeping half of the trout secured in a super-secret location until they grow larger for you anglers to catch a toad down the road. The carry-over from last fall and winter are bringing in some nice numbers for people drifting from Rock Wall to the Zebra Room or center-lake from the Observatory to Windy Point. My thoughts are using dough baits and night crawlers if you want to reel in dinner. Trolling hasn't fared quite as well and water temps are in the mid-fifties. But for you die-hard trollers, the rainbow trout colored Rapalas will be your best bet. Keep your lines low. These babies are staying fairly deep between 12-20ft. Give it time. They will be moving east soon with the temperatures rising. The bass are still in pre-spawn and haven't shown all their hiding places yet. You bassers hold tight. When these guys emerge from their winter haunts, they will be hungry, aggressive and protecting the nest. Please remember these fish grow very slow and will be spawning in early spring so return them quickly to fight another day. You just have to be patient for that time and then wham, bam, thank you ma'am. Catfish and bluegill are still not showing, but the carp are coming out in the warmer afternoons just in time to get your shooting skills sharpened for the BBMWD's Carp Round-Up. A new category for fishing only is added to this year's event and we expect a giant turn-out and even better prizes. We expect those crazy, in the news, read-all-about-it, record breaking numbers to come rolling in this season. Don't miss out. Share your photos with us!
