Big Bear Discovery Center matches its name

The Big Bear Discovery Center is aptly named.
From its site on Big Bear Lake's north shore, the 5,700-square-foot center offers a variety of exciting, entertaining and educational programs to be discovered. Maps and coupons are available at the free information center at Golden Bear Cottages Resort 39367 Big Bear Blvd., Big Bear Lake, CA 92310.
The center, co-managed by the nonprofit San Bernardino National Forest Association and the U.S. Forest Service, offers visitors the opportunity to get up close and personal with nature.
Discovery Center programs include free naturalist-led weekend nature walks, interpretive programs, stargazing parties, canoe and kayaking tours, family campfire programs and hiking along the Pacific Crest Trail.
There are also hands-on experiences panning for gold, building a birdfeeder, map and compass skills, and high-flying rockets.
The 2012 Music in the Mountains summer concert series at the Discovery Center's amphitheater offers concerts under the stars.
A concert is set for 6:30 Saturday, featuring The Long Run, Experience the Eagles; with special guest Fortunate Son, Tribute to John Fogerty & Creedence Clearwater Revival.
The series continues at 7 p.m. July 7, 21, and Sept. 1.
Admission is $25 adults and $10 teens. You can bring a picnic supper and lawn chairs.
Proceeds benefit restoration programs and youth development.
Happy paddlers - and other wildlife - will enjoy the Grout Bay Canoe and Kayak tours Thursdays through Sundays.
Nature walks are 1 and 2 p.m. Saturdays; 11 a.m. Sunday; and Thursday Night Hikes. Children will enjoy Story Time from 12:30 to 1 p.m. every other Saturday.
There is a Campfire Series at 7 or 8 p.m. (check schedule) covering topics from the Moonridge Animal Park to stargazing; from Native American story telling to "Ranger Talks" and "All About Bats."

You can take a hike in the National Children's Forest near Running Springs or join in Greenhouse restoration activity from noon to 3 p.m. Sundays.
