It's close to the end of a great season of fishing on Big Bear Lake! October 1st and 2nd saw over 1000 anglers working the waters of Big Bear Lake. Pursuing stringers of hefty trout stocked for the event to be proclaimed the overall winners in adult/junior male and female categories. If you were not lucky enough to claim one of these prizes, you can still fish for a few more weeks.

BIG BEAR LAKE OCTOBER FISHING REPORT:

The trout bite had been fair to good this past week, especially for trollers fishing in 12 to 20 feet of water. The best action is still from the west ramp to the dam and into Papoose Bay. Most trollers are using a variety of spoons fished behind just two to four colors of lead core. Bait anglers are using a slip bobber in 12 to 20 feet of water and floating dough baits. The trout are two distinct sizes, either fresh DFG pan-sized at eight to 10 inches or nicer holdover trout often topping two pounds. The bass action is fair around the observatory and north shore toward Grout Bay. Jigs and plastics are best in eight to 20 feet, but there has been some topwater around the weed beds early and late, with both smallmouth to two pounds and largemouth to three pounds in the action. The crappie action is fair to good around sheltered docks and rocky structure, with small, sparkle jigs the best bet. Most are eight to 10 inches long. Also catfish and bluegill.
Now would be a good time to do a tackle tune-up. Check and replace your fishing line. Even if you don't totally re-spool, you should strip off 50 feet or so to get rid of frayed line that can break. Lube up your reel, check your drags and replace if need be. Make sure your hooks are sharp and your tackle ready. Just think how bad you would feel if you lost out on a truck or big bucks because your tackle was lacking.

Now that the Troutfest is over, the trout fishing will still be great until the snow begins to fall. Take advantage of it. Big trout from the tournament plus our holdover population will be whacking lures and baits for some time. Don't miss out on the greatest Fall fishing, only at Big Bear Lake.

Trout: Best action in Southern California has been at Jenks Lake, Green Valley Lake, and Big Bear Lake. Limits are pretty easy at Lake Hemet for experienced trollers, but shore anglers near the dam are also getting fish. Green Valley and Big Bear can be a little tougher, but both are still producing a lot of fish.

A new lake record catfish was landed by Dan Marshall, Sugarload, when he landed a 28.67-pound cat, beating the old record of 27.82 pounds set in 2009. Marshall caught the cat on a piece of hot dog. Overall the catfish bite has been spotty, but the trout bite had been good this past week, especially for trollers fishing in 12 to 20 feet of water. The best action is still from the west ramp to the dam and into Papoose Bay. The crappie action is fair to good around sheltered docks and rocky structure, with small, sparkle jigs the best bet. With that said let's get tackle boxes ready and poles re-strung and here we go again for a season of trout and bass fishing on Big Bear Lake.

Big Bear Lake is a good producer of wild brown trout. Running clear and cool below Big Bear Dam, Bear Creek also supports a good population of rainbows and, some say, a few salmon. While I've never seen a salmon caught out of the stream, I know they exist in Big Bear Lake. So it is possible. Two trailheads east of Snow Valley Ski Resort provide good access to the stream below. While the fishing is good in the upper reaches of the stream, the further down you go the better it gets and the greater the ratio of browns to rainbows. This year, even before the runoff was complete, I met an angler down near the confluence with the Santa Ana that had caught and released a 19" brown along with a couple of nice 'bows. In the last few years with the improved water situations and nicer weather it could be even better in the years to come.

BIG BEAR LAKE - The long-awaited opening of a new bridge on Highway 18 high across the Big Bear Dam finally happened on June 24th.

Two harsh winters interrupted more than 2-years' of construction on the bridge.

The Big Bear Lake bridge, a $39 million span includes 3-lanes, 10-foot wide shoulders and a sidewalk.

Local businesses have hailed completion of the bridge and the impending unrestricted opening of Highway 330 in early July. The bridge eliminated a slowing point at the intersections of highways 18 and 38.

"We are very excited to know that residents and tourists will enjoy the beauty of our mountaintop for generations to come, as they drive across the new signature bridge into the Big Bear Valley." said City of Big Bear Mayor Bill Jahn.

No more hour-limits, but good trollers are still getting limits of fish in three to four hours in the west end of the lake from the west ramp to the dam and into Papoose Bay. Most trollers are using Thomas Buoyants, Needlefish, or Dick Nite spoons fished behind just two to four colors of lead core. Bait anglers are using a slip bobber in 15 to 20 feet of water and floating dough baits.

A 10.22-pound rainbow caught by Ronald Couture, Riverside, on a CD Rapala caught off the SS Relief. Dan Nucum, Lucerne Valley, had a 9.3-pound rainbow off Juniper Point on garlic Power Bait. Steve Caines, Riverside, landed a 7.69-pond rainbow on a deep diving Rapala off Lagonita Point. Overall, the trout bite has remained very good for both shore and boat anglers. Trolling is still very good in the Trout Triangle (Eagle Point to Lagonita Point to the Solar Observatory) with two to four colors of leadcore and Needlefish in the new UV Flo-Pink or old standards in brown trout or copper chicken wing colors or Rapalas. Bait anglers are getting fish in the Juniper Point and Stanfield Cutoff areas all the way to the dam now. The floating dough baits are still the best bet. DFG trout plant this week. Trout: The best action in Southern California has been at Big Bear Lake with limits of holdover rainbows to seven pounds or better pretty common for trollers and shore anglers. Quite a few fish over five pounds thanks to plants for the two recent fishing derbies.
There were 673 anglers who participated in the Fishing for $50K event this past weekend. The big trout and winner of the $500 big trout award and the largest trout on Berkley Power Bait was Robert Kimura, Los Angeles, with a 9.61-pounder. Top trout in the women's category was a 7.67-pounder landed by Maria Leverett, Victorville. For juniors, Robert Ash, Sugarloaf, won the boy's division with a 2.18-pounder, while Kyleigh Villa, Palm Springs, won the girl's division with a 2.01 pounder. Only one of the 10 tagged trout was landed over the weekend, but it wasn't the $50,000 fish. Most bait anglers are fishing floating baits. Trollers continue to hammer the fish in the Triangle (Eagle Point to Lagonita Point to the Solar Observatory) with two to four colors of leadcore and Needlefish in the new UV Flo-Pink or old standards in brown trout or copper chicken wing colors

Randolph Orozco, Los Angeles, landed an 8.8-pound rainbow on the new Needlefish color. Most of the rainbows are two to three pounds, but fish topping five pounds are showing each week, and there were DFG plants two and three weeks ago.

The bass action is good, especially in the Eagle Point and in all the bays on jigs and plastics. Most bass anglers are getting largemouth to four pounds and smallmouth to three

pounds, in about a 50-50 mix. The crappie action is very good around sheltered docks and rocky structure, with small, sparkle jigs the best bet. Catfish are still slow, but only a few

Most of the rainbows are one to three pounds, but fish topping five pounds are showing each week, and there were DFG plants last week and two weeks ago. The bass action is good, especially in the Eagle Point and in all the bays on jigs and plastics. Most bass anglers are getting largemouth to four pounds and smallmouth to three pounds, in about a 50-50 mix. The crappie action broke wide open with the warm weather this past week, especially around sheltered docks and rocky structure, with small, sparkle jigs the best bet. Catfish are still slow, but few anglers are targeting them. This is excellent trout action in spite of winds much of the past week. The fish are still showing in the bays with water entering the lake, off Juniper Point, and in the Standfield Cutoff area for shore anglers fishing floating baits, while the trollers are hammering the fish in the Triangle (Eagle Point to Lagonita Point to the Solar Observatory) with three to four colors of leadcore and Needlefish in brown trout or copper chicken wing colors on warmer, sunny days, but closer to the surface on cooler, windy days or overcast days. DFG trout plants this week and last week. The bass are rebounding after the cold front moved through an the bite has been pretty good on points and into the bays on plastics. Highway 330 up the front side of the San Bernardino Mountains is going to be opener temporarily for Memorial Day weekend, but will close again after this weekend for further repairs until about July 1st. The alternate route is up 18 through Lake Arrowhead, Highway 38 out of Redlands, or up the back side from the high desert, also on Highway 18. Big Bear Lake fishing report May 22, 2011:

Big Bear Lake: With rain and snow falling and whitecaps rolling over the surface of the lake, there were only 364 anglers in the May Trout Classic this past weekend - the smallest turnout in years. But Sunday was especially brutal. Those who braved the elements, however, caught fish. Top trout was a 9.10-pounder landed by Jack Storti, Westlake Village, for the $1,875 top prize. The second place fish was worth $1,275 and the 8.78-pounder was caught by David Marshall, Big Bear City. Bob McGrew, Fawnskin, was third with a 8.37-pound rainbow. Brandy Finch, Winchester, won fourth with a 7.49-pounder, while fifth went to Dale Bauwens, West Hills, with a 5.27-pound rainbow. Sixth was a 4.36-pounder caught Steve Rzepka, Running Springs, and seventh was a 2.84-pound landed by Greg Smith, La Verne. Eighth spot was taken by Will Anderson, Camarillop, with a 2.74-pounder, while the final money spot was won with a 2.68-pounder landed by Ryan Turner, Huntington Beach. In the junior division (12-15 years old), Cody Hemsley, Fontana took top honors with his 2.39 pound trout, while the Pee-wee division (5-11 years) winner was Michael Torres, Orange, with a 2.59 pound rainbow. The best action has been at Grout and Boulder bays and along the north shore from Stanfield Cutoff to Juniper Point with Power Bait tops for still fishermen. Trollers are working the Trout Triangle (Eagle Point to Lagonita Point to the Solar Observatory) with three to four colors of leadcore and Needlefish in brown trout or copper chicken wing colors. Garrett Francis, San Diego, had the best trout of the past week when he caught a 12-12 rainbow the Friday before the derby on a trolled Rebel Crick-Hopper, a small crankbait. DFG trout plant this week. The cold has really hammered the bass, panfish and carp bites. Highway 330 up the front side of the San Bernardino Mountains is still closed, so the only access is up 18 through Lake Arrowhead, Highway 38 out of Redlands, or up the back side from the high desert, also on Highway 18, or on Highway 38 out of Redlands. DFG trout plant last week. Bob Miller, Big Bear City, has limited on rainbow a couple of times in the past week with his best fish pushing three pounds. A few bass reports are starting to come in, but other species are mostly slow. Carp are moving into the shallows for bow-fishermen. The 29th Annual May Trout Classic will be held May 14-15 and it is limited to the first 500 entrants, and only about 100 spots remain. Entry fee is $65 per angler with a free kid's division for children of entered adults. Payout with a full field will be $8,000 total, divided among the nine biggest trout caught. This is a two-day, non-profit event, and all proceeds go toward planting Big Bear Lake with trout. This week's 8,000-pound plant of trophy fish included fish at 13 to 15 pounds, quite a few from six to eight pounds, and most from two to four pounds. Big Bear Lake fishing report May 9, 2011
The flowers are popping and the sun seems to be staying out most of the time, however some think that spring has not quite sprung even though the trout are sure that it has.
Trout fishing is on the way to being the best season ever with numerous hold over monsters being caught and lots of very healthy pink meat slabs hitting the baits. Still the east end is working well but fish are being caught over the entire 3000 acres and yes; today we are full to the top and we are 3000 surface acres strong. I know I keep saying this but the dough-bait treble hook and sliding-sinker seems to work every day for the "shore fisher" people. Trollers are just knocking the heck out of them with the usual stick-baits and needle-fish like taking candy from a baby. Bottom line is: do all the things that you used to do and you will catch fish!

Lake Patrol is out on the weekends for you. I forgot to charge the battery all winter people, and I do need to fix that fuel gage folks. During the mid-week until mid-May, bring a paddle to get back if you are one of those mentioned above. Our two public launch ramps are open and the MWD guys and gals are waiting to serve you. If this is your first trip of the year, check your lifejackets to make sure they are serviceable and you have all your carriage requirements on board. If you don't know what is required STOP and come by our office for information.

Don't forget to sign up for the May Trout Classic being held on the 14th and 15th. Fishing should be on the hook.

Big Bear Spring is for catching trout and this year has been a great one at Big Bear Lake and keeps on going strong.(read the fish report above)

The Spring pattern is here and the

trout are not acting any different than they always do this time of the year;

suspended in the sweet spot that is determined by the water temp and the

dissolved oxygen content of the water. This pattern is not that hard to figure

out, however you need to work a little harder than just tossing your bait out

and waiting 8 seconds for something to eat it like we saw this spring. So use a

slip bobber from the shore and some controlled depth fishing if trolling from

the boat. Of course the same old lead core stories always hold true to get that

bait down to where the fish are. But depsy divers and adding some weight to your

drift works well also and if you are really fancy the down rigger option is a

favorite for the folks that like to work while fishing.

So, stay off the bottom unless you are fishing for fresh

water spiny back sculpin because that is all that is living down there. Looks

like the 30 foot mark near the dam and moving up to 15 feet to 20 feet as you go

east will get you bit. Be flexible with your depth; start high as these trout do not like

to swim down to eat and move down as needed. Good stringers are still coming in for

those who know the secret controlled depth fishing methods that are needed this

time of year for good trout fishing here on Big Bear Lake.

The crappie are still hanging around and people are getting full stringers on

meal worms and mini jigs.

Bass are starting the summer feed mode and some great

reports on small and largemouth bass are coming in spinner baits and buzz bait

working well.

Catfish - come and get them whenever you are ready using

the special stinky whatever to fill the stringer. 20 plus pounders have been caught.

Carp shooting has been very slow as the fish are not showing themselves.

Maybe they are a little shy after our carp tournament.

Big trout are being released in Big Bear Lake
as the 2011 trout and bass fishing season is getting underway...

The Big Bear Municipal Water District released water from Big Bear Lake Tuesday, part of the first effort in 15 years to reduce the amount of water from the reservoir.

"We can't handle any more water in the lake," said Don DiCarlo, director of marketing and public relations for the Big Bear Lake Marketing Association. "The lake is filled to the brim."

Water is released from the dam in Big Bear Lake on Tuesday. This winter season marks the first time since 1996 that the Big Bear Municipal Water District has released water from the lake. Snow and rain in the mountains have kept the lake full for the first time since 1996.
The lake's maximum water depth is 73 feet. The depth Monday was 72 feet, 11 inches, according to an association news release.

Water district officials expect melting snow to continue to flow into the lake through May, making it necessary to release more water from the lake's dam into the streams.

Keeping the lake full of fresh, clean water helps improve its quality and clarity, said Mike Stephenson, lake manager for the water district.

"We've certainly put in some nice, clean, aerated water and released some old, not-so-clean, not-so-aerated water," he said.

Back in October 1998, the water level in Big Bear Lake was down more than 17 inches, Stephenson said. The water quality was not real good, the high docks dried up and the lake's aesthetic quality took a dive.

Now, the water quality is up and the high water level is good for the fish, he said.

"When the quality of water is up, the fish grow faster and just do better, Stephenson said "It's going to be a great year for fishing at Big Bear Lake."

"The trout are jumping on the bait as soon as you toss it in the water. Limits are the rule for now and fishing is at its best for nice carry-over 3 to 4 lb beauties. So get on up here to the Lake and beat the weather cuz the trout fishing is unstoppable for all bank fisher people. That magic dough-bait and hook trick with a sliding sinker is working very well from the observatory to Stanfield Cutoff, and remember to stay out of the creeks and leave the spawning trout alone PLEASE" Stephenson said!

East Launch Ramp opened on the first of April and looks to be a good week of weather so check your boat plug and life jackets and come on down. You are next in line because there won't be a crowd.

As far as the warm water species - well, the water is not warm. It is 45 degrees so they are nonexistent for now, but expect this to be a banner year for bass fishing and of course the crappie are one year larger with lots to eat so it should be epic.

"If you haven't been up to the Lake in a while do come now and see that the Lake is full and the trout are not" Stephenson said.

Types of Big Bear Lake Fish

Black Crappie:

A black crappie reaches about 2 pounds. When fishing for crappie, use

minnows, shiners, or shad, two to three inches long. Crappie will hit small

rapalas, or Broken Backs, however, the most popular lure is an 1/8th ounce lead

head jig with a rubber or marabou skirt. The most popular colors are green and

white, red and white, yellow and white and purple and black. The jigs can be

suspended from a bobber or jigged at a variety of depths.

Blue Catfish:

Blue catfish grow with its environment. It is not strange to see a 15-20 pound

catfish in Big Bear lake. Catch this fish with shrimp, nightcrawlers, clams,

mackerel, red worms, minnows, fish belly strips or even your leftover hotdog!

Bluegill:

This fish weigh about 2 pounds. Pieces of nightcrawlers, redworms, mealworms,

grubs and nymphs are good bait. Use a small hook, #10, and suspend the bait from

a bobber of fish the bottom in shallows near tules. Small spinners and bass

plugs will also induce bluegill to strike.

Carp:

Carp can be caught while fishing Big Bear Lake with PowerBait nuggets.

Smallmouth Bass:

Smallmouth bass prefer cool water and are bottom dwellers. They tend to stay

at about 30 feet below the water. These fish weigh less than 4 pounds. When

fishing Big Bear Lake's smallmouth bass use bucktail streamers, spinners, flies,

spoons, minnows, small crawfish, nightcrawlers or hellgramites. In autumn,

surface plugs will work. Refer to the fish report for updates.

Largemouth Bass:

Largemouth bass live as long as 15 years and can weigh more than 20 pounds.

They eat other fish like bluegill and other critters such as frogs, crawdads and

sometimes even ducks! Use heavy duty equipment and plenty of bait like minnows,

crawfish, nightcrawlers or hellgramites.

Rainbow Trout:

This fish is caught with insects, snails, worms, sowbugs, crawfish, roe and

small fish. The weight varies with this fish, but regular catches of 4 to 7 pounds reported. Fish Big Bear Lake.
