To help maintain Big Bear Lake as a premium trout fishery by planting trophy sized fish each year prior to the May Trout Classic. The May Trout Classic will remain a family oriented event with two divisions for the kids between the ages of 5 and 15.  The kids of participants vie for 1st through 3rd places and have a chance at winning rods and reels and trophies. Last year we were able to give a fishing pole to every child under eleven thanks to our generous sponsors and your entry monies. You make it all happen! The application is also available May 1 on this link   http://www.maytroutclassic.com/page297.htm
The payout is $8000, based on 500 entrants. The first nine (9) places are "in the money".  The entry fee is $65.00.  All entrants are given a May Trout Classic hat and are welcome to join us for all the festivities at the awards show. And remember, this is a family affair, bring the kids!

May 21, 2013 Fishing Reports

Here's the latest Lucky Bear Fishing Report:

Trolling for rainbow trout has remained challenging to say the least but with determination, variety and creativity you will catch your limit within a day!  Big Bear Lake has been spectacular as far as conditions and weather goes with only slight wind issues time to time this past week.  You should check your gear, have fresh lines, hooks etc. and have it all in proper order and prepare to catch a trophy size bow.  We caught a beautiful, 5lb 14oz bow on Lucky Bear Fishing Charters this past Saturday morning at the start of the Jim Hall Memorial May Trout Classic.  It was caught trolling near Windy Point on a night crawler at the surface behind a 4" Orange Tiger Salmon Glow Spoon!  Don't be afraid to try different and new things especially if the fishing is tough.  We had shortened up the leader off salmon spoon from 3' down to 1' right before the lunker hit and these different combos have worked often when nothing else was.  The past week we trolled 12 hours and covered the entire west end of the lake and fish were caught in all different locations.  Hottest lures were Pink and SIlver UV Hum Dingers, Hot Banana Hot Glow Little Warrior,  Barney Little Warrior, Hot Pink XRap, various Rainbow Rapalas and Night Crawlers.  The leaded lines hit at 3-5 1/2 colors and the down riggers at 3-6, 26 and 28 feet.  MANY other lures had fish on but these were our noted best during the past week.  Don't be shy with your arsenal of lures or about changing up rigging.  Be willing to try new things, techniques and types of lures.  Even a different swivel or snap could be the trick.  Also a second pole fishing  license is not a bad idea when things slow down.  Different speeds, willing to change locations and depths and realizing when a lure turns off you must move on no matter how much one lure may have been giving is important if you want to catch.  When a HOT pattern, color or finish stops try changing the depth or speed then give in and change up to something new.  One day it will be silver finish on most lures then it will switch to copper or gold.  Also hammered or smooth or UV or GLOW all options are worth a try now.  Stay prepared and watching for the fish to hit because each one matters more since most locals are reporting slower fishing than usual.  When the trout does take your bait or lure be patient let them run if they want and enjoy reeling in instead of rushing or forcing and you should land your fish. We are at about 2-3 trout on the lines per hour for an average and an occasional 5-6 fish per hour.  It's not about the fish always it's about beautiful surroundings, fun and time enjoying good company and also some relaxation so bring a friend or family member up and take turns watching the fishing poles while you wait for a LUNKER to take your line.  When you work a little harder and don't give up it sometimes feels even more rewarding when you catch a fish.  Check out Big Bear Sporting Goods for helpful tips and all the gear/lures/tackle necessary to have a great day on the lake 909-866-3222, Pleasure Point Marina for Pontoon/Kayaks/Slip Rentals 909-866-2455, Capt John's Fawn Harbor for Fishing Boat Rentals 909-866-6478 and Lucky Bear Fishing Charters 909-866-7303.

Free Fishing days for 2013 are July 6 and September 7

Provided by the Big Bear Lake Marketing Association

Have you ever felt the excitement of watching your bobber suddenly jiggle, then dive out of sight? Or feeling the tap-tap-tap of a bass as it tastes the worm on the end of your line? Or having a salmon practically tear the rod out of your hands as it smashes your lure? What's that? You say you never learned to fish?

If you are new to the sport of fishing, and not sure if you will enjoy it, a great opportunity awaits you. CDFW offers two Free Fishing Days each year in Big Bear Lake. On these days, you can fish without a sport fishing license. Free Fishing Days provide a great, low-cost way to give fishing a try.

Archived Big Bear Lake fishing reports:
May 10, 2013

Bass fishing has been epic. Spinner baits and buzz baits are working well, but I hear stories everyday about someone catching one on a trout lure. Trout fishing has been slow, but somehow the fishing charters are doing very well catching trout. Maybe these Big Bear Lake experts know something we don't.

Crappie have started the spring frenzy and are being caught on the rocks at Stanfield and any other structure and it looks to be shaping up to have some bigger eating slabs this season. White mini-jigs is always a go-to bait but any small jig and worm will make things happen and with a rising bluegill population, a worm and a hook can make a kids day.

FISHING NOTES AND TALES
http://pineknotlanding.net/fishingreport.html

Fowler's Fish Tales 4/29/13  Cliff Fowler

Spring has sprung in our mountain paradise.

Hi, this is Cliff Fowler with Cantrell's Fishing Guide service at Pine Knot Landing with your season's opener of Fowler's Fish Tales! Coming out from a relatively mild winter, at least our late march snow has brought us up to 60in of precipitation; basically another average season. The Lake, however, is 4.48 feet down from capacity with surface temps in the low to mid 50's. [The temp recorded this week was an average of 50F. (Recorded on 4/15/13, Unknown measurement location, MWD)]. Our Lake is slightly ahead of schedule maturation-wise but that what happens after lean winters.

All of our spring constitutionals must be put into effect prior to heading out on to that 3,000 acre majestic lake.

First, don't forget to get a new fishing license. It sounds stupid but you would be amazed at how often it is overlooked.

Second, take inventory of your tackle box and replace everything lost from last season and replace old jars of open bait as they can go bad with age.

Next, replace all mono-fillament line with fresh no matter how much it was used it also deteriorates with time, not usage. You'll only find out how bad it can get when that personal trophy breaks you off!

The quality is there even though the numbers may not be. Each and every one of those native pink meats is a line stretching experience. Rainbows are a spring spawner and even though there's not a lot of runoff coming into that oversized swimming pool, 'bows can still be found trying to make their way upstream.  Big bear has a tributary closure from March 1st to Memorial Day Weekend just to protect them during this annual cycle. An easy rule of thumb "If the water is still, you are in the lake. If the water is moving, you are in a tributary." Fish in a tributary during this time gets you an all-expense paid trip to the gray bar motel, a hefty fine, lost tackle, and three very mediocre meals a day. Not my idea of a great vacation.

We're lovin' life a mile and a quarter closer to heaven so grab your rod, grab your sweetie, pull up a rock and go! Teach a worm how to swim, this is Cliff Fowler with Cantrell's Fishing Guide service signing off with your most recent copy of… Fowler's Fish Tales!

Trout fishing is back to the summer norm and will continue into July with the same dough baits, needle fish, and rapalas working every time. The magic trick to catching is to go fishing. Slip sinker rigs from shore and trollers are doing very well. Fish are kinda hanging center Lake from Windy to Juniper Point.

Bass fishing is great everywhere on spinner baits and jigs. My buddy, the other 'Big Mike' Madden caught and released what would have been the new Lake record bass this past week. I love the smoke colors gitz-it tube baits, but I know that these bass number one forage is crayfish, so that is my two cents.

Crappie fishing is WIDE OPEN!!!!! on mini jigs at the docks and rocks. I still say white is the color but ten fisher-people, ten different answers. The worm on a hook trick is always the dollar for dollar most efficient form of entertainment for the kids when pan-fish fishing and guess what? It is all about the kids.

This week we just put in another large stocking of bluegill and we are seeing a lot of action around the shallows again with these fish. A worm or mini jig is always a good presentation. Also a guaranteed lake record was spotted in the batch for you trophy folks.

Catfish reports are slow coming in but it is time to put out smelly stuff. Summer comes real soon.

Carp boys come on down because you are the next contestant. Carp are showing on the surface - still no spawn activity but when the sun is high the carp are floating up to bask.

April 24, 2013 --The Municipal Water District has a goal to reestablish the bluegill population on Big Bear Lake
and up until nowwe have seen just a little progress, however the first report of some slabs showing up was quite
encouraging. Minijigs are always a good bait to see if they are in the neighborhood and the secret worm on a hook
trick is ano brainer.
2012-13 Snow Forecast for Big Bear Lake, CA was right on: 125+ inches snow this year.
Rain fell as traditional in May and October and Big Bear Lake received a series of
rain showers and thunderstorms in July and August that continued to keep our mountain
area lake full at the top of the San Bernardino National Forest pristine and green.
NOTE: Average Big Bear Lake temps for SPRING:
daytime near 55-60 degrees and nighttime near 35 degrees.
NOTE: Average Big Bear Lake temps for SUMMER:
daytime near 72-78 degrees and nighttime near 50 degrees.

Crappie: will show in big numbers soon; a couple here and there are reported but it will pop any minute and
go postal. It is a pretty short lived frenzy but it is truly a frenzy.

Catfish: this would be a great time to see if can snatch a catfish on some cut mackerel or shrimp or stink bait or hot dog or cheese bait or
secret dough bait or get it anything that smells a little or a lot! Some cats are showing this spring
already and this is quite early as water temps are up  and they seem to be moving and looking to feed.

Bass: fisherman are surprisingly happy with the early start to some pretty darn good bass showing the spring
with spinner baits and jigs being the bait of choice. Always a crawdad looking thing is a good choice because that is prime forage for these big mouths.

Shore fishing: The top areas are still along the north shore from Stanfield to Windy Point, and a lot of fish are still stacked up where water is flowing into the lake.

Trollers:
mostly working on three to four colors of leadcore and Needlefish or Buoyants with the best action in the east end. Water temperature has been uniform at 49 degrees. The bass bite has been improving with both smallmouth and largemouth showing in fair numbers around docks, rocky areas, and other shoreline structures.

Big Bear Lake fishing report

Get to Big Bear Lake this month as the temps start to warm up. The fish have been

sleeping like polar bears and want some dang food; any food. We are seeing most of

the action during the warmest time of the day and it adds up to early spring frenzy

in the making. I have been seeing fish caught all over the Lake from the east to

the west but I do believe as the east warms first the fish will sprint that

direction. Fish are still stacked-up on the tributaries but as the inflow subsides

they will give up on another unsuccessful spawn and go find something to eat. Dough

baits are still the ticket on a sliding sinker in light colors. Don't forget not to

use rope for your line. Try the lightest line you can stand because with the water

clarity a screaming 17 feet they can see the rope. Also remember light colors when

it is light and dark colors when it is dark, seems to still be holding true. Trout

are active, so time the weather and come get lunch. The East Launch Ramp is open

for business and is the only place to access the Lake by boat.

The marinas will be open for the rest of the fishing and boating season. The best

boat rental coupons we have seen are for the guests at Golden Bear Cottages Resort.

These historic resort cabins are located close to the lake on Big Bear Blvd. at

Metcalf Bay. Phone 909-866-2010  www.GoldenBearCottages.com

The largemouth for some reason are pretty active right now and a few are showing up

for you die-hard bass fisherman. Seems kind of early to me but the docks and rocks

are holding willing to strike fish.

FISHING TIP OF THE WEEK

At the beginning of each season change your entire line on your reel. Sun and artificial light, especially florescent light weakens your line.

April Fishing News:

FRESHWATER TOP SPOT:  BIG BEAR LAKE
Trout: The best action in Southern California has been at Big Bear Lake with limits of holdover rainbows to seven pounds or better pretty common for trollers and shore anglers. Quite a few fish over five pounds thanks to great mountain fishing weather.
A 10.22-pound rainbow caught by Ronald Couture, Riverside, on a CD Rapala caught off the SS Relief. Dan Nucum, Lucerne Valley, had a 9.3-pound rainbow off Juniper Point on garlic Power Bait. Steve Caines, Riverside, landed a 7.69-pond rainbow on a deep diving Rapala off Lagonita Point. Overall, the trout bite has remained very good for both shore and boat anglers. Trolling is still very good in the Trout Triangle (Eagle Point to Lagonita Point to the Solar Observatory) with two to four colors of leadcore and Needlefish in the new UV Flo-Pink or old standards in brown trout or copper chicken wing colors or Rapalas. Bait anglers are getting fish in the Juniper Point and Stanfield Cutoff areas all the way to the dam now. The floating dough baits are still the best bet. DFG trout plant this week. The bass action is good, especially in the Eagle Point and in all the bays on jigs and plastics. Most bass anglers are getting largemouth to four pounds and smallmouth to three pounds, in about a 50-50 mix. The crappie action is very good around sheltered docks and rocky structure, with small, sparkle jigs the best bet. With cool water, Catfish are still a little slow. For fishing information: Big Bear Lake Marketing Association 909-866-2010 (http://goldenbear.net/news.cfm) Big Bear Marina 909-866-3218 (www.bigbearmarina.com), Big Bear Sporting Goods 909-866-3222.

Trout: Remember, the best action in Southern California has been at Big Bear Lake with limits of rainbows of four pounds or better pretty common for trollers and shore anglers.

Lake Patrol is out on the weekends for you.  Our two public launch ramps are open and the MWD guys and gals are waiting to serve you. If this is your first trip of the year, check your lifejackets to make sure they are serviceable and you have all your carriage requirements on board. If you don't know what is required STOP and come by our office for information.

Big Bear Lake is a good producer of wild brown trout. Running clear and cool below Big Bear Dam, Bear Creek also supports a good population of rainbows and, some say, a few salmon. While I've never seen a salmon caught out of the stream, I know they exist in Big Bear Lake. So it is possible. Two trailheads east of Snow Valley Ski Resort provide good access to the stream below. While the fishing is good in the upper reaches of the stream, the further down you go the better it gets and the greater the ratio of browns to rainbows. This year, even before the runoff was complete, I met an angler down near the confluence with the Santa Ana that had caught and released a 19" brown along with a couple of nice 'bows. In the last few years with the improved water situations and nicer weather it could be even better in the years to come.

Mountain lakes are full to the brim and fishing is great.
April

"We can't handle much more water in the lake," said Don
DiCarlo, director of marketing and public relations for the
Big Bear Lake Marketing Association. "The lake is filled to
the brim."
Water is released from the dam in Big Bear Lake on Tuesday.
This winter season marks the first time since 1996 that the
Big Bear Municipal Water District has released water from the
lake. Snow and rain in the mountains have kept the lake full
for the first time since 1996.
The lake's maximum water depth is 73 feet. The depth Monday
was 72 feet, 11 inches, according to an association news
release.
Water district officials expect melting snow to continue to
flow into the lake through May, making it necessary to
release more water from the lake's dam into the streams.
Keeping the lake full of fresh, clean water helps improve its
quality and clarity, said Mike Stephenson, lake manager for
the water district.
"We've certainly put in some nice, clean, aerated water and
released some old, not-so-clean, not-so-aerated water," he
said.
Back in October 1998, the water level in Big Bear Lake was
down more than 17 inches, Stephenson said. The water quality
was not real good, the high docks dried up and the lake's
aesthetic quality took a dive.
Now, the water quality is up and the high water level is good
for the fish, he said.
"When the quality of water is up, the fish grow faster and
just do better, Stephenson said "It's going to be a great
year for fishing at Big Bear Lake."
"The trout are jumping on the bait as soon as you toss it in
the water. Limits are the rule for now and fishing is at its
best for nice carry-over 3 to 4 lb beauties. So get on up
here to the Lake and beat the weather cuz the trout fishing
is unstoppable for all bank fisher people. That magic
dough-bait and hook trick with a sliding sinker is working
very well from the observatory to Stanfield Cutoff, and
remember to stay out of the creeks and leave the spawning
trout alone PLEASE" Stephenson said!

East Launch Ramp opened on the first of April and looks to be
a good week of weather so check your boat plug and life
jackets and come on down. You are next in line because there
won't be a crowd.

As far as the warm water species - well, the water is not
warm. It is 45 degrees so they are nonexistent for now, but
expect this to be a banner year for bass fishing and of
course the crappie are one year larger with lots to eat so it
should be epic.

"If you haven't been up to the Lake in a while do come now
and see that the Lake is full and the trout are not"
Stephenson said.

The rest of the state has also experienced a water surplus,
so much so that Gov. Jerry Brown declared an end to
California's drought.

Visit http://www.bigbearbassfishing.com for more details.

The crappie fishing will be epic this season which

means next year we will see some slab daddies showing up. The mini jigs and

worms seem to make it happen all summer long.

Catfish fishing: all summer long, so get ready

to throw some cut mackerel or a perfectly good hot dog out there to see what

happens!

Here it is:  If you come to Big Bear Lake right now and cannot catch trout, then you should break your fishing rods in half and throw your tackle box in the trash. I have been fishing my whole life and it doesn't get any better than this for premier Southern Cal rainbow trout fishing, PERIOD!!!!!!!

Types of Big Bear Lake Fish

Detail report brought to you by Big Bear Lake Marketing Association

Black Crappie:

A black crappie reaches about 2 pounds. When fishing for crappie, use

minnows, shiners, or shad, two to three inches long. Crappie will hit small

rapalas, or Broken Backs, however, the most popular lure is an 1/8th ounce lead

head jig with a rubber or marabou skirt. The most popular colors are green and

white, red and white, yellow and white and purple and black. The jigs can be

suspended from a bobber or jigged at a variety of depths.

Blue Catfish:

Blue catfish grow with its environment. It is not strange to see a 15-20 pound

catfish in Big Bear lake. Catch this fish with shrimp, nightcrawlers, clams,

mackerel, red worms, minnows, fish belly strips or even your leftover hotdog!

Bluegill:

This fish weigh about 2 pounds. Pieces of nightcrawlers, redworms, mealworms,

grubs and nymphs are good bait. Use a small hook, #10, and suspend the bait from

a bobber of fish the bottom in shallows near tules. Small spinners and bass

plugs will also induce bluegill to strike.

Carp:

Carp can be caught while fishing Big Bear Lake with PowerBait nuggets.

Smallmouth Bass:

Smallmouth bass prefer cool water and are bottom dwellers. They tend to stay

at about 30 feet below the water. These fish usually weigh less than 4 pounds.

When fishing Big Bear Lake's smallmouth bass use bucktail streamers, spinners, flies,

spoons, minnows, small crawfish, nightcrawlers or hellgramites. In autumn,

surface plugs will work. Refer to the fish report for updates.

Largemouth Bass:

Largemouth bass live as long as 15 years and can weigh more than 20 pounds.

They eat other fish like bluegill and other critters such as frogs, crawdads and

sometimes even ducks! Use heavy duty equipment and plenty of bait like minnows,

crawfish, nightcrawlers or hellgramites.

Rainbow Trout:

This fish is caught with insects, snails, worms, sowbugs, crawfish, roe and

small fish. The weight varies with this fish, but regular catches of 4 to 7 pounds reported. http://www.luckybearfishing.com/

HISTORY: Big Bear Lake is a NEW LAKE. Trout fishing is good in the spring, summer and fall months. Large and small mouth bass, crappie and catfish have reestablished themselves after years of decline. What created the NEW LAKE? The Big Bear Municipal Water District is in the middle of a five year plan to eradicate prolific undesirable aquatic vegetation and allow the desirable plants to grow. They have planted crappie, bluegill and smallmouth bass in large numbers. Shocked and removed thousands of tons of carp. Habitat and aquatic zones have been created to support the fishery. The changes are evident and will continue as the lake transitions from the weed choked put and take trout lake that it was to a well balanced NEW LAKE.

Big Bear Lake Fishing

Fish Big Bear Lake: Big Bear Lake is a trophy rainbow trout fishery and also boasts a large population of largemouth and smallmouth bass, catfish, crappie, bluegill, and pumpkinseed. The Lake is stocked regularly throughout the year by the California Department of Fish & Game.
In 2010 alone, the department stocked more than 545,000 trout. The Fishing Association of Big Bear Lake also stocks trout in conjunction with its annual May Trout Classic.
MWD cooperates with the Association in sponsoring a fall plant of catfish and trout

MORE BIG BEAR LAKE FISHING REPORTS and HINTS...

Whatever your favorite method of fishing for trout is, it should work now and for weeks to come. Trolling with leadcore line is the best way to fish the lake. If you don't have leadcore don't be afraid to troll the surface with straight mono. When trolling the leadcore try Needlefish, Buoyants, Helgys or Rapalas in your favorite colors, for the flatline mono go with CD Rapalas in gold/black, silver/black or my favorite rainbow. Bait anglers can score trout in their favorite spots, or by drift fishing the lake with Eagle Claw Nitro and nightcrawlers.

There are a lot of big fish in the lake, perhaps a new lake record, so keep a loose drag, take your time and wear the fish down. Tip up...tight line and good fishing to you!
